For Angèle Verret painting is and must remain unknown. She states: “As far as painting goes, my only reasonable certainty is doubt.” Doubt about that which in its appearance and process designates it, identifies it, categorizes it as such, or keeps it within certain bounds.
Some slaying, therefore, had to be done here and there – Histories and stories had to be kissed goodbye, skills, technical and other, had to be unlearned, conceptual moulds had to be broken, certain principles had to be forgotten. And from the debris an imaginative world had to be shaped or invented anew, since, once again, one had to discover the amazing sensation of painting creating a scandal.
